Every fox that is seen doesn't have rabies. Any place you find mice, rabbits, and chickens you are likely to see a fox. Coon are very likely to carry rabies too, and they are seen everywher. This media attention could cause a panic everytime people see a fox. That is not called for.
Ok so he shot and wounded a supposable RABIED fox and LEFT IT laying in the thicket so other mammals can eat off and SPREAD RABIES?! Who trains these cops?! If he really had to shoot it then one shot should have killed it -- he had it cornered under an outbuilding for gosh sakes. At that point animal control should have come and removed the carcass so rabies would not be spread. So officer -- NOW what are we supposed to do? Shoot every squirrel and chipmunk that may have eaten off this dead foxes rabied body???
I hope Chris Sears gets fired and arrested for animal cruelty. Citizens would get arrested for something blatantly cruel like this, and I for one hope to see some outrage over this. Barnesville does not need trigger happy pigs like him!
Give the man a break. Didn't a fox give someone rabbies recently in Lamar County? If a wild animal is roaming around a populated area there is usually something wrong with it. I've never heard of an "Adopt A Fox" program with the H.S. or anywhere else.
Oh let me tell you -- that fox came out of hiding this morning. Not wounded and obviously rabied. It ATTACKED at my dog. It charged at my back door slamming into it with its jaws wide open. It then attacked at a young man visiting my home. If my dog hadn't alerted me to its presence in my yard things could have ended up much worse. The young man and my son cornered it under my house and kept it there until animal control and the police as well as a reresentitive of the city came out. It attacked at the young man in my yard two more times. The third time it attacked at the police officer who then, with one shot, killed it. Made me very sad but it was definately rabied. Again -- this should have been taken care of to a resolution YESTERDAY. This morning, because of the officers neglect of duty yesterday, myself, my dog, my son, his friend and the police officers and the city workers responding to my call were all put in peril. My dog is fine -- under quarentine but boy that ol' girl sure could run when she needed to!! I am so thankful that God gave her to me to protect me. Question is -- now what is going to be done? If there are 2 rabied foxes I am sure there are more. How do we as a community protect ourselves?
A few hours ago a fox suspected of being rabid was shot and killed. The head has been sent off to be tested. This animal attacked a large dog and went after a young man before being killed. Let's be thankful noone was bitten and for our police force.
leave chris alone, he is the city and county fire arms instructor. He might not can shoot, but at least ernie can. way to go chris, way to train ernie. good shot ernie!
shut up ignorant. Quit being such a negative person. Get a life. Wild animals are everywhere. If they attempt to kill it and it gets away just be on the look out and call it in when you see it.
HAS ANYONE SEEN MY POMERANIAN. LAST SEEN ON ATLANTA STREET. HE IS MEDIUM SIZE WITH A FLUFFY TAIL AND IS REDDISH IS COLOR. HE ANSWER TO THE NAME OF FOXY. IF YOU YELL FOXY HE WILL COME RUNNING. (HAS SLOBBERING PROBLEM)
I live downtown and some people have dogs that roam around unleashed and causing trouble all over the neighborhood! They give our mailman grief EVERY day. They are constantly in other yards where they don't belong chewing and digging up things. They keep other dogs around here, that are leached and fenced,in an up roar!I myself have tried to contact animal control or an animal shelter and have had a hard time getting any response. The dog owner is never home and when they are at home, they won't come to the door! I can't just shoot the dog! Lord knows where I would end up. That fox should have been caged and put back in the woods. It was out of its natural habitat and was defending himself. Bears have been spotted in areas of Atlanta and no one shoots and kills them. They make every attempt to put it back in its natural habitat!!
I live in north Lamar county and own a couple acres of land. We see fox, deer, snakes among other animals. I have a small dog that we let out from time to time. We have never been threatened by any of animals from the woods. One morning I let my dog outside for a few minutes and out of no where came 2 big Rots. They started attacking my dog and came after me on my own property. I was lucky to get my dog in before he was killed. I called animal control then and they told me that I could not shoot at those dogs at all or I could be prosecuted!! They told me that they would have to bring cages out to trap them first. Why couldn't the fox be trapped? So why did anyone have to shoot the fox?? Only cops can shoot first? Only fox can be shot at? Really!!!!!!!!!
I can only speak of the situation here yesterday -- the fox was definately rabied. The police officer had to shoot it. It attacked my large dog, then it attacked twice at a young man in my yard before attacking at the police officer. It was making the most god awful noises just before it made the first attack at my dog. Once you her that sound, you know what a rabied animal sounds like and you will never forget it. I am thankful for the polie officer and city workers that came out an took care of the situation.
I believe the officer did the right thing under the circumstances. I am an animal lover myself, but this is different protecting the community. I applaud his judgment think possibly other measures like traps should be brought in.
While it is true that healthy foxes are sometimes sighted during daylight hours, it is equally true that a healthy fox wouldn't hang around one particular spot for a significant amount of time (such as the time it took to make a call and for that call to be responded to), particularly if there was a lot of human activity in the area.
Officer Sears did his duty sincerely and made the judgement call that he has been empowered and entrusted to make as an officer in the service of public safety.
I hope you realize we are talking about 2 different officers responding on two different days. Officer Chris did NOT do his duty. He shot at a fox that was reported as staggering around. When he shot, it was laying not even 6 feet in front of him. After the second shot, the fox decided to leave and ran at full throttle into a neighboring yard. It as not wounded at all. Chris did not follow through and see that it was captured. The following day, Ernie had to respond to that fox coming back into the same yard Chris chased it into and by now it was in attack mode. He shot it thus keeping the residents safe. One cop did his job, the other was simply just putting in time.
Thank you for the clarification Observer. If what you stated is factual, then Ernie deserves a medal, and Chris deserves to get fired and prosecuted for animal cruelty.
After reading the aper today you poster #22 dont seem to know what you are talking about. Its funny how quick people are to put the police down. Why didnt animal control take care of that anyway....they sure took care of Honey the missing dog real fast. You probably call 911 for someone to raise your kids. So did Chris shoot the fox or did he not shoot the fox...are there two or three foxes? U people just need to get a grip and stop putting down people for trying to help.
He is wounded now.
He is wounded now. They could have tried to cage him.
Officer Sears did his duty sincerely and made the judgement call that he has been empowered and entrusted to make as an officer in the service of public safety.
Great job Ernie, boo on you Chris.
